Festival 2020

April 16, 2020 - Festival 2020 Postponement due to Covid 19

In the interest of public health and the safety of our patrons, artists, and production personnel, and in accordance with current emergency and public health restrictions regarding Covid 19, Theatre on the Ridge has made the difficult decision to put its Festival 2020 season on indefinite hold. The four productions announced for the festival, now in it’s 6th year, will no longer run as scheduled.

At this time, the productions have only been postponed, not cancelled; however, no revised dates have been set. Patrons who have purchased a Patron’s Pass will be contacted directly in the near future with more information and details on their options.

Please click here to learn more about our proposed alternate online programming offerings for these unusual times.

We look forward to being able to gather together again soon to share our love of theatre and community.
Our Fabulous Festival 2020!

Cottagers and Indians by Drew Hayden Taylor
Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand
God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza
Innocence Lost: A Play About Steven Truscott by Beverley Cooper

There may be fewer shows on this season’s roster but just as much great entertainment! Festival 2020 still presents outstanding emerging and local talent in a captivating mix of the thought provoking, classic and entertaining plays that Theatre on the Ridge is becoming known for.
Cottagers and Indians by Drew Hayden Taylor
Preview – July 8, at 8 pm
Opening – July 9, at 8 pm
Performances – July 10, 11, 14, 17, 18 at 8 pm
& July 12, 15, 19 at 2 pm

Arthur Copper, a life-long lakeside Indigenous resident wants to re-introduce wild rice into the lake while Maureen Poole, a life-long cottager, wants to preserve her lakefront as it has been for as long as she can remember. Cottagers and Indians is a thought provoking mix of comedy and commentary about contemporary confrontations between environmentalism and consumerism, Indigenous and non-Indigenous sensibilities and is being presented with the generous support of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
Cyrano de Bergerac adapted from the play by Edmond Rostand
Preview – July 15 at 8 pm
Opening – July 16 at 8 pm
Performances – 21, 24, 29, 30, August 1 at 8 pm
& July 18, 22, 25, 26, August 2 at 2 pm

Cyrano de Bergerac is the classic swashbuckling romantic adventure reimagined to once again tell the story of Cyrano, the consummate hero and underdog, who is willing to sacrifice his own happiness for that of his own true love Roxanne, by secretly assisting a handsome but vacuous acquaintance to secure her hand in marriage. Simultaneously humorous and romantic, ribald and tender, this story of unrequited love and honour appeals to all ages and remains as popular and timeless today as when it was first performed in 1897.
God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza
Preview – July 22 at 8 pm
Opening – July 23 at 8 pm
Performances – July 25, 28, 31 at 8 pm
July 26, August 1 at 2 pm

God of Carnage is a tour de force for 4 actors, where the veneer of civilized adulthood is tested when two sets of parents try to resolve a playground incident between their children, with disastrous and comic results. Our 2015 production returns and is definitely worth a second look! Recommended for ages 12 and up.
Innocence Lost: A Play About Steven Truscott by Beverley Cooper
Preview – August 5 at 8 pm
Opening – August 6 at 8 pm
Performances – August 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, 15 at 8 pm
& August 9, 12 at 2 pm

Innocence Lost: A Play About Steven Truscott premiered in 2008 at the Blyth Festival and is a perceptive examination of community and how good people make bad choices, through the true Canadian story where a 14 year old boy is wrongfully convicted of the rape and murder of a 12 year girl in a small Ontario town. With an ensemble cast playing multiple roles over the span of time from accusation to acquittal, Ms. Cooper insightfully dissects how a tragedy in a small town became a tragedy of justice for an individual and a country. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
